Crowds begin to descend on Kingston as Tragically Hip rolls into town

When the Tragically Hip concert begins at 8:30, tune to CBC TV to watch the performance.

The Hip are returning to Kingston, their hometown, for the final concert.

This past spring the band announced frontman Gord Downie had terminal cancer and the band would embark on one final tour across Canada.

Those with tickets to the sold-out show will be inside the 6,700-seat Rogers K-Rock Centre.

Tickets for the "Man Machine Poem" tour sold out nearly immediately after they went on sale in June - leaving many fans disappointed they'd miss a final chance to see the Hip live.

In the lead up to The Tragically Hip: A National Celebration, CBC is also offering additional content across all platforms.

"Our goal is to bring the experience.to as many Canadians as we can", she said. And tens of thousands of fans - Prime Minister Justin Trudeau among them - are expected to be there. The concert will be broadcast on large screens and food and drink options will be provided. At Cobourg's Victoria Park, the concert will be broadcast during the Northumberland Rotary Ribfest and Music Festival.

"We've been going non-stop from the moment we set up", said T-shirt salesperson Jill Gerat.

"The band was so tight - just so Canadian", said Dabbs.

CBC Radio One's q will do a special show on Friday, August 19, featuring well-known Canadian acts performing Hip covers, and CBC Music will continue to feature daily content including the ongoing series The road to Kingston, The history of every Hip album and Hip Road Trip. "I figured it was a crappy little bar band or something".
