Suddenly it's Trump sounding soft on illegal immigration

Aug 27, 2016, 07:17

When Donald Trump announced his candidacy for the presidency a year ago, the first problem he raised and made his dominant issue was illegal immigrants from Mexico.

Trump said that on his first day in office, he would authorize law enforcement to actively deport "bad dudes", such as those who have committed crimes, which he said numbered "probably millions".

Trump acknowledged Wednesday, during an interview with Sean Hannity of Fox News, that he may be for letting law-abiding illegal immigrants who have been in the country for a long time pay a fine so they can remain in the country. One man said he wanted them to pay taxes, work and learn English. "And I believe they will go higher because we've never had a politician speak directly to the people". "Trump, I love you, but to take a person who's been here for 15 or 20 years and throw them and their family out, it's so tough, Mr. Trump"'. "I don't know the comment he made, but I like him very much", Trump said. Jeff Sessions and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani introduced Trump to the stage at the Mississippi Coliseum.

Coulter seemed pretty steamed about Trump veering away from his old immigration plan, sarcastically tweeting, "Well, if it's 'hard, ' then nevermind".

Trump has been heavily criticised by minorities for his proposals on immigration, which include deporting millions of undocumented foreigners, building a wall along the Mexican border, and suspending Muslim immigration to shore up national security.

"I don't know what he's going to do but you are one popular guy all over, but in Texas in particular", Trump said to Perry, who was nearby. She wasn't happy when he changed his immigration stance. "I think this is a mistake".

But Trump, who is trailing in the polls, says that revelations that many donors to the Clinton family foundation met with as secretary of state represents "one of the most shocking scandals in American political history".

"Look I think that's some of the things that he just mentioned".

"We've always had great relationships with the African American community and I've made it such a focal point", Trump said on Thursday before a meeting at his NY headquarters with black and Hispanic Republicans. He assured the audience that there would be "no amnesty, but we work with them".

Attribute some of that to Roger Stone and other Trump associates who responded to Cruz's GOP speech by saying the New Yorker might back opponents to the Texan in 2018.

"We reject the bigotry of Hillary Clinton which panders to and talks down to communities of color and sees them only as votes, not as individual human beings worthy of a better future", Trump said in his Wisconsin speech. "Well, I'm going to do the same thing", Trump told Bill O'Reilly in an interview.

Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions, a longtime immigration hard-liner and an early Trump supporter, was put in the awkward position of defending the nominee's new softer approach.

Trump, it had become clear, is thinking about changing his immigration policies.

"Opposition is not just toxic with Latinos and Asians and African-Americans, but with white voters", Schulte said.

Trump interrupted his own speech to introduce Nigel Farage, who led an effort to withdraw the United Kingdom from the European Union.

Approximately 11.3 million undocumented immigrants were living in the U.S. in 2014 and undocumented immigrants from Mexico made up the largest share of this population, according to government data. The impromptu focus-grouping would have been a startling display of uncertainty for any presidential candidate on any issue, but it was especially so in this case: immigration has been Trump's top policy issue for more than a year, the election is in less than three months, and lives hang in the balance.
