Amit Shah inaugurates BJP CM's meet

New Delhi, BJP President Amit Shah said on Saturday that his party has ushered in an era of "politics of performance" in the country and asked the states to play a big role in the implementation of schemes and to bring in good governance.

Shah, who addressed the one-day meeting of BJP CMs, deputy CMs and its presidents in these states, pointed out that the party rules over 51 per cent of the country's landmass and 37 per cent of the population.

Besides the upcoming Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand and later Goa and Gujarat, the party is also seriously looking at 2019 when general elections are due.

Fadnavis said that in a little over two years, Modi government has initiated 80 new schemes for people's welfare prominent amongst them being ones such as Mudra Yojana, Make in India, Stand up India and Start up India.

This was the first such meeting held by the BJP since it came to power in May 2014 and comes days after Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid out the party's "pro-poor and good governance" agenda at a meeting of core committees of state units.

Later talking to reporters, Fadnavis said the meet was focused on the welfare of the poor, middle class, marginalised sections, farmers and labourers.

The agenda would be adopted by the BJP, which would help counter the Opposition's perception that the Modi government was pro-corporate, party leaders said.

So even as Modi and Shah lauded the "success" of pro-poor and pro-peasant projects in some BJP-ruled states, their stress was on central schemes.

Sources told IANS that the day long interaction will conclude with the Prime Minister's speech.

All the BJP CMs except Vasundhara Raje attended the meeting. The state governments of the BJP have been re-elected time and again on the basis of performance.

"The country and the world can feel a new India".

Mr Fadvanis said governance and not politics was the agenda of the meeting, when asked if recent controversies or UP elections also figured in the deliberations.

He said a review of the party-run state governments was done and they were all doing "very well". "The PM asked us to work in mission mode; to take up several works at once. Then we can develop fast", Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan said later.

His Maharashtra and Jharkhand counterparts Devendra Fadnavis and Raghubar Das and party national vice-president Vinay Sahastrabuddhe are the members of the "Garib Kalyan Agenda Committee, which could focus on basic necessities of common man like "Roti, Kapada aur Makaan, Padhai, Dawai aur Rozgar ke Intezam" (food, clothing, housing, education, medicine and employment opportunities)".
