Explosion rocks SpaceX launch site in Florida during test

As of now, there are no reports of injury or fatality, but the blast is likely a huge setback for private space exploration, not to mention SpaceX itself.

A SpaceX rocket exploded Thursday morning during a test on a launch pad in Cape Canaveral.

You can watch live streaming of the launch site.

SpaceX said "an anomaly" had occurred while the rocket was being loaded with fuel.

SpaceX is one of two companies shipping supplies to the International Space Station for NASA.

Facebook would have been among the customers for bandwidth on Amos-6 and planned to partner Eutelsat Communications to boost data connectivity in Sub-Saharan Africa.

To bring costs even lower, SpaceX wants to reuse rockets it's previously launched.

The SpaceX Falcon 9 had been slated for an overnight blastoff on Saturday, September 3 at 3 a.m. from pad 40 with the AMOS-6 telecommunications satellite valued at some $200 million.

Chris Norton says Facebook remains "committed to our mission of connecting people to the Internet around the world".

Massive clouds of black smoke were spotted by several Twitter users at Kennedy Space Center.

There's been an explosion on SpaceX's Cape Canaveral launch complex.

Multiple explosions were felt several miles away and witnesses uploaded photos to social media of the dark smoke billowing from the launch pad. In June previous year, a rocket carrying Nasa cargo to the International Space Station fell apart in-flight when a strut holding a helium bottle snapped, setting off a cascade of events that destroyed the rocket moments later.

"My initial thought was the building had been struck by lightning but the sound was a lot deeper and the windows kept rattling for a lot longer than a typical lightning strike", said an engineer working close by to the Observer. "Kennedy Space Center Emergency Operations Center personnel are monitoring the situation and are standing by to assist if required", said spokesperson Stephanie Martin in the statement.

This is the second major issue SpaceX has had with its signature launch vehicle, the Falcon 9 rocket.

SpaceX, which is leasing the pad from the Air Force, had hoped to launch two astronauts on a test flight to the ISS within a year.
