Blue Bell recalls some ice cream distributed in the South

The Brenham-based ice cream maker said it is voluntarily recalling half-gallons of Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough and Cookie Two Step that contained contaminated cookie dough provided by a third party vendor, Aspen Hills.

The products were distributed to 10 states: Tennessee, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

Half gallons of Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough and Cookie Two Step, and the pints of Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough are covered by the recall.

Customers with questions can call Blue Bell at 979-836-7977 Monday through Friday until 5 p.m. central.

"The voluntary recall has been initiated due to concerns of possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination", officials said in a prepared statement. The ingredient was supplied to Blue Bell by Aspen Hills, Inc.

Blue Bell Ice Cream said these brands are affected by a recall. See code dates that are being recalled below. Anyone that purchased a recalled product should not eat them and should return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.

The recall notice from Aspen Hills posted by Blue Bell does not name the ice cream company.

Listeria can cause nausea, abdominal pain, high fever, headache and could be potentially fatal for the young, elderly or those with compromised immune systems.

Listeria is a potentially risky bacterial infection that can cause fever, headache, nausea and diarrhea. It also does not specify how many entities in Alabama and Texas received the combined 1,936 cases of cookie dough.

Blue Bell shut down production past year after a Listeria outbreak.

"This voluntary recall does not affect our production facilities".

According to Blue Bell, the potential of a listeria contamination was discovered during internal testing.
