World leaders kick off second day at UN General Assembly

He drew titters from the collection of world leaders and diplomats in the high-ceilinged General Assembly hall when he noted that "at times both America's adversaries and some of our allies believe that all problems were either caused by Washington or could be solved by Washington". Ban called the bombers "cowards".

Obama, a golfer and avid basketball player, didn't say whether he would take up the secretary-general's challenge - or what his future plans are. The group was responsible for the kidnapping of hundreds of schoolgirls from the town of Chibok more than two years ago.

In prescribing his perceived path to security, the president spoke of the "promise" of the United Nations.

"I called this summit because this crisis is one of the most urgent tasks for our time, our capacity for collective action", the USA leader said in his final address to the UN General Assembly.

President Barack Obama called on wealthier nations Tuesday to do more to help millions of refugees find new homes and asked all leaders to imagine what it would be like "if the unspeakable happened to us".

The UN estimates there are about 21.3 million refugees forced to flee due to armed conflict or persecution.

President Barack Obama is urging nations to reject authoritarianism and embrace more open societies.

GREENE: OK. Speaking this morning to my colleague, NPR's diplomatic correspondent Michele Kelemen who covered what is likely President Obama's last speech before the United Nations General Assembly in NY. Please see our terms of service for more information.

"This is the paradox that defines our world today", Obama said.

World leaders have gathered for the assembly and our Prime Minister will make his speech later today.

"The despicable acts of sexual exploitation and abuse committed by a number of United Nations peacekeepers and other personnel have compounded the suffering of people already caught up in armed conflict, and undermined the work done by so many others around the world", Ban said. Obama has used his United Nations addresses in the past to confront domestic anxieties, including during his reelection battle with Mitt Romney in 2012 and later when racial tensions prompted protests in Ferguson, Missouri, in 2014.

"In order to move forward, though, we do have to acknowledge that the existing path to global integration requires a course correction", Mr Obama added.

Speaking about the global economy, the US President said: It starts with making the global economy work better for all people, and not just for those at the top.

Millions of Palestinian refugees are registered with the United Nations.

Kerry expressed "strong concern" with the recent violence in Kashmir, particularly Sunday's attack, and called on all sides to reduce tensions.

He blamed all sides for killing innocent people, but "none more so than the government of Syria, which continues to barrel bomb neighbourhoods and systematically torture thousands of detainees".

"On the Korean Peninsula, the fifth nuclear test by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea has again threatened regional and worldwide security", Ban said, using North Korea's official name.

"We all have to do better as leaders in tamping down rather than encouraging a notion of identity that leads us to diminish others", Obama said, partially referring to the Israeli/Palestinian conflict.
