India fight back thanks to centuries from Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara

England had struggled with their opening stands last month in Bangladesh, where they drew a two-test series 1-1.

India will resume on day three 474 runs behind with Murali Vijay (25 not out) and Gautam Gambhir (28 not out) at the crease.

Rangana Herath grabbed Zimbabwe's final three wickets to return figures of 8-63 as Sri Lanka wasted little time in finishing off the hosts on the final morning of the second Test at the Harare Sports Club yesterday.

Only the 652 made in 1984-85 in Chennai and 559 for 8 declared at Kanpur made way back in 1963-64 topped the total raised by England in this city, hosting its first-ever Test.

At the end of Day 4, India had 4/319 to their name, finding themselves 218 runs behind England's total. "We didn t plod much against the spinners and tried to be attacking in our approach", said Ali.

But India had reason to be thankful for DRS, adopted by them in this match for the first time, when Pujara called for a review which demonstrated the ball would have bounced over the stumps. He was out caught at wide slip by Alastair Cook off Ben Stokes in the 92nd over.

A brilliant spell from Woakes failed to reap any rewards, as Pujara used his feet well to the spinners and looked assured after a tricky start to his innings, while Vijay came down the track to launch Ansari for six.

Vijay and new batsman Pujara - who has in the past scored a triple century for Saurashtra in Ranji Trophy at this very ground, then took up the daunting task of replying strongly to England's third-highest ever score in India. India went into lunch 375 runs behind the visitors.

Umpire Chris Gaffaney upheld the appeal from Zafar Ansari after Pujara, on 86 in a team score of 208 for 1, was rapped on the back leg, playing down the wrong line while defending. The introduction of Ben Stokes with about half an hour to go to lunch brought loose balls. He took 11 runs off Ravindra Jadeja's first over of the day, then repeatedly targeted R Ashwin the moment he dropped short.

Stokes was on 60 when Saha spilled the ball after diving to his left.

3rd Test ton for Cheteshwar Pujara against England - his most against a single side in Tests. Spin was introduced early in the attack by Cook and the openers looked quite comfortable playing spin, especially Gautam Gambhir, his foot work against the spin was awesome. After Pujara, Kohli and Vijay took india forward with a 41-run stand which saw both batsmen slow down the scoring rate. He was ably supported by Stuart Broad (1/54) and left-arm spinner Zafar Ansari (1/57).

Opener Vijay was unconquered on 57, after having faced 142 balls and hitting 2 sixes and 5 boundaries in his 224-minute stay.
