McIlroy to undergo test on troublesome back

The 28-year-old was ruled out for nearly two months at the start of the year after suffering a stress fracture to his ribs, and there were fears he was facing another spell out.

Rory McIlroy will undergo an MRI scan in Belfast on Monday to discover the extent of a back injury which is threatening to blight not only this Players Championship but his entire summer.

The 28-year-old four-time major victor is suffering from a back injury, but made a strong start to the day at Sawgrass. Following a three-week absence to allow his back to heal, McIlroy returned to play four out of six weeks leading into the Masters and rushed back again after taking some time off to get married.

McIlroy also believes getting back into practice so rigorously after having three weeks off for his wedding and subsequent honeymoon has played a part in the flare-up.

"I've been struggling with it a bit this week, sort of felt it for the first time on Sunday", the Northern Irishman told reporters.

By close of play McIlroy's even-par aggregate was nine adrift of the leaders, Kyle Stanley and Louis Oosthuizen.

"It's Sawgrass, it's tricky", McIlroy said.

Despite his No. 2 world ranking, McIlroy is almost five points behind leader Dustin Johnson, and has not won since the Tour Championship last fall.

"That's going to put a smile on me the rest of the day for sure", he said. Jon Rahm, a player whose star continues to rise at pace, signed for a 72 to remain at four under.

"To come back to this golf course that we know how challenging it is, it's maybe not the best thing, but it is the way we planned it and we live with it".

Danny Willett's troubles continued after withdrawing only nine holes into his second round.
