Mattis Plans To Unleash An 'Annihilation Campaign' On ISIS

Marine Corps Gen. Joe Dunford, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the Coalition's effort had "reduced ISIS-held territory, limited their freedom of movement, destroyed a great deal of their leadership, reduced the flow of foreign fighters into and from the region, diminished their financial resources".

Three years into America's campaign, President Donald Trump is studying ways to accelerate the pace.

"I'm confident that we've made progress in that regard over the last couple months", Dunford told reporters at the Pentagon.

Despite tough talk from top U.S. officials in recent weeks and the deployment of an aircraft carrier strike group to the region, Mattis said the best option for North Korea is finding an worldwide solution to effectively apply pressure on Pyongyang.

Dunford explained that despite the situation on the ground in Syria becoming increasingly complex, the United States and Russian Federation have been able to de-conflict operations.

American forces would support a group of Syrian Arab and Kurdish fighters known as the Syrian Democratic Forces driving southeast along the Euphrates from Raqqa toward Deir el-Zour, said the officials, who weren't authorized to speak publicly on the military details and demanded anonymity.

Dunford did not say when the new channel opened, but the enhanced cooperation marked a stark change in tone on Russian Federation from just last month when Russian Federation threatened to cut the hotline after Trump ordered airstrikes against the Syrian regime, its ally, for a chemical weapons attack it carried out.

The changes in strategy came after President Trump ordered the Defense Department to lead a governmentwide review of the anti-Islamic State strategy.

Russian Federation and Syria have condemned the airstrikes, saying the "brazen" attacks violate the Arab country's sovereignty and show Washington's claims of fighting terrorism are false.

Secretary of Defense James Mattis said that it appeared the Russians had attempted to get the militia convoy to turn around, but was unable to do so. "The intent is to prevent the return home of escaped foreign fighters".

"He directed a tactical shift from shoving ISIS (Daesh) out of safe locations in an attrition fight to surrounding the enemy in their strongholds so we can annihilate ISIS".

"First, he delegated the authority to the right level to aggressively and in a timely manner move against the enemy vulnerabilities", Mattis said.

The administration is considering the deployment of an additional 3,000 to 5,000 troops to Afghanistan to join the roughly 8,400 US troops there already to train, advise and assist Afghan forces in their fight against the Taliban, and conduct counterterrorism missions against groups such as al Qaeda and ISIS.

If the United States "persists in anti-DPRK sanctions without understanding its rival, the (Trump) administration will have to take full responsibility for the ensuing catastrophic consequences", he warned.

A US military statement said Thursday's strike occurred after Russian Federation tried unsuccessfully to dissuade pro-Assad forces from advancing toward Tanf. "But, no, it has not been made yet", Mattis said in response to a question.

USA advise-and-assist forces still end up in harm's way.

He did say that the United States will "never work with the Assad regime" in Syria, however.
