Trump lambasts 'witch hunt' after ex-FBI boss named Russian Federation probe chief

May 20, 2017, 14:57

The news agency cites current and former United States officials familiar with the exchanges and says the interactions form part of the record now being reviewed by Federal Bureau of Investigation and congressional investigators.

The Republican leader, who has struggled to shake off suspicions that Russian Federation helped put him in the White House, has been accused of seeking to block the investigation by firing FBI chief James Comey.

Several sources close to Flynn and to the administration tell The Daily Beast that Trump has expressed his hopes that a resolution of the FBI's investigation in Flynn's favor might allow Flynn to rejoin the White House in some capacity-a scenario some of Trump's closest advisers in and outside the West Wing have assured him absolutely should not happen...

The revelation by Rosenstein "means that the letter that the president sent us is not accurate", Murphy said, referring to Trump's statement attributing the firing to Rosenstein's memo.

US President Donald Trump lashed out at the appointment of a special counsel to investigate accusations that his campaign collaborated with Russian Federation to sway the 2016 US election, tweeting this morning that it is "the single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history!"

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein knew President Donald Trump was going to fire FBI Director James Comey before he wrote a memo justifying the ouster of the law enforcement chief, Democratic senators said Thursday.

Trump, speaking in a joint press conference with Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos, called the appointment of Robert Mueller as special counsel to the investigation on Russia's potential election tampering - a move, he said, he respected - as part of "a witch hunt" against him and his administration. He was sacked as national security adviser in February after it emerged he had misled Vice President Mike Pence about conversations with the Russian ambassador to Washington in December.

The people who described the contacts to Reuters said they had seen no evidence of wrongdoing or collusion between the campaign and Russian Federation in the communications reviewed so far.

The conversations took place as U.S. intelligence agencies found evidence that Russian Federation interfered with the USA election to support Trump. Trump has long bristled at the notion that Russian Federation played any role in his November election victory.

"Director Comey was very unpopular with most people. Mr. Rosenstein has done the right thing", Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of NY said on the Senate floor. He thought that under those conditions, Trump might not spot him and call him out.

"It's just not common that you go out and fire an FBI Director", he said. But Trump pulled him into an embrace and Comey didn't reciprocate.

US House Speaker Paul Ryan said the appointment was consistent with his goal of ensuring that "thorough and independent investigations are allowed to follow the facts wherever they may lead".
