NFL shortens overtime to 10 minutes

For all the maneuvering, end zone celebration talk generated the most buzz.

He said the league had consulted more than 80 current and former players.

Citing player safety, National Football League owners have shortened the overtime period from 15 to 10 minutes for the 2017 season.

Research suggests the number of games that will go into overtime and end up tied will climb slightly.

The league, however, will continue to penalize any celebration deemed offensive or in bad taste, including those that embarrass opponents or mimic the use of weapons.

Among the rule relaxing are those on group celebrations, using the ball as a prop after a touchdown, going to the ground, and snow angels, according to USA Today's Tom Pelissero. Allowing for these kinds of celebrations will offer a little more enjoyment, and less frustration when a flag is thrown because a player is having a good time.

For years the running joke has been the NFL stands for No Fun League. Some will claim player health and safety, but that's a bunch of nonsense.

The NFL said there were 83 overtime games in the last five seasons.

The NFL's goal is to make celebration penalties more consistent without disrupting the flow of the game. Teams will also have more players for the fourth preseason game, when many coaches are just looking to keep their key players healthy heading into the regular season and get one final look at bubble players and practice squad possibilities.

The fourth and final rule change allows a second player to return from injured reserve. The player must be on IR for at least six weeks and they can return to games after sitting out eight weeks.

For the record, celebrations that are meant to taunt the other team, carry on for an excessive period of time, or cause a delay of game will still be penalized.
