Trump becomes first sitting US president to visit Western Wall

May 24, 2017, 04:16

Greeting Abbas at the White House three weeks ago, Trump touted U.S.

He later travelled by helicopter to Jerusalem and, in remarks at Israeli President Reuven Rivlin's residence, launched his latest salvo against Iran.

While visiting Israel during his first global trip in office, President Donald Trump spoke out against the idea of making a nuclear idea with Iran.

"Once again we reassert to you our positions", Abbas said elaborating, "accepting the two-state solution along the borders of 1967, a state of Palestine with a capital in East Jerusalem alongside Israel... and resolving longstanding issues based on global law and agreements... in accordance with Arab peace initiative".

"I am truly hopeful that America can help Israel and the palestinians forge peace and bring new hope to the region and its people".

As he departed, Trump tweeted that his visit to the Middle East was "great", and that he was "trying hard for peace".

Trump aims to use his two-day visit to further his quest for what he has called the ultimate deal - jump-starting peace talks between the Israelis and Palestinians.

However, to achieve peace, the main obstacle is the Israeli occupation of Palestinian lands, the settlements and the failure of Tel Aviv to recognize the Palestinian state the same way we recognize Israel, the Palestinian leader said after a meeting in Bethlehem with Trump.

This is not the first stop of Trump's trip to the Middle East to inspire mockery on Twitter.

"I do think initiating the possibility of us discussing, us, meaning the Israelis, discussing with the Palestinians is a hopeful step", says Gott.

"We can keep going through the charade of a peace process on and on".

Trump reportedly told Lavrov and Russian Ambassador Sergei Kislyak at a meeting this month about an Islamic State threat using laptops on planes, including highly classified details about the origin of the intelligence, which came from a "partner" later reported to be Israel.

Harvard Law professor Alan Dershowitz said Monday on Fox News' "Fox and Friends" that President Donald Trump is "saying and doing all the right things" during his trip to Israel.

He will also pay a visit to the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial on Tuesday.
