Kyrie-markable: Irving's 42 carries Cavaliers past Celtics

Locking up Thomas long-term would keep an elite scorer on the roster (Thomas averaged the third most points per game this season). When he went to the bench, the Celtics led 43-33.

Then Kyrie Irving became unstoppable, James found his groove, and the Cavs left Quicken Loans Arena with a 3-1 lead in the Eastern Conference Finals.

In this one, Irving scored 36 of his points following James' fourth foul with just under seven minutes remaining in the first half, which forced James to the bench. The Cavs gave up 61 points in the second half, and while Kevin Love, 28, went on a tear, scoring 22 points in the first half, most of the Cavalier offense took half-the-night off. The Cavs will look to come out with a renewed focus in tonight's game based on their "letdown" in the previous contest. Previously, LeBron was 49-0 in the playoffs when his team led by 20-plus points.

The Cleveland Cavaliers were cruising through the Eastern Conference before Game 3.

He's the best player in the game.

"He's got to be aggressive, get downhill, play like he's been playing, play confident".

"I didn't have it", said James. He knows that. We know that. The question now is, how will James respond in Game 4?

Game four is Tuesday night in Cleveland. Despite going 2-for-11 in the half, Bradley cashed in on a game-winning three to seal it for the Celtics.

James, who finished with 34 points, was joined in double figures by Kevin Love, who scored 17 points with 17 rebounds and five assists. To make matters worse, the team learned that Isaiah Thomas would be out for the remainder of the playoffs due to a torn hip suffered over the past couple of weeks. He had six rebounds and six assists, but also committed six turnovers, including a costly miscue down the stretch when his pass was stolen by Jae Crowder.

After reviewing the video from Game 3, Celtics head coach Brad Stevens was once again impressed with James for the most part making the right basketball play most of the game.

Kyrie Irving saved LeBron James, Ty Lue and the city of Cleveland from a total state of panic Tuesday night. Fingers crossed that it's the team from the 10-0 start who does that work and not the team who finished the regular season by going 11-15 after the All-Star break.

James did not do that Sunday in a 111-108 loss in which the Cavs owned a 21-point lead midway through the third quarter. Boston was motivated to atone for its bad Game 2, but the Celtics are still terribly shorthanded and faced with tough matchups all over the court. Little did they know that the Cavaliers' other superstar was about to seize it, and perhaps the series too. The fan was removed by Cavs security personnel who stepped in.

Had the Celtics believed Smart was any kind of definitive answer as a fill-in point guard, Stevens wouldn't have done so much scrambling in search of workable options. From there, any performance below the incredible standard he set was deemed a failure, and that tipping point came in 2010, when, in what turned out to be LeBron's final home game in Cleveland before leaving for Miami, the Cavs lost Game 5 at home to the Celtics by a score of 120-88. Fans can watch this game live on TNT.
