After UK, Egypt attacks, Libya seen as militants' haven

Egypt responded to the attack, the fourth since December by IS to target Christians, with airstrikes against what the military says are bases in eastern Libya in which the militants have been trained.

The facade of the Tel Aviv-Yafo municipality building wore red, white, black and golden hues on Saturday night as it was lit up in solidarity with Egypt, which suffered a lethal terror attack on Friday.

Egyptian authorities have been fighting IS-linked militants who have waged an insurgency, mainly focused in the volatile north of the Sinai Peninsula though attacks have taken place also on the mainland.

"Egypt will never hesitate to strike terror bases anywhere", el-Sissi said in a televised address to the nation.

The Egyptian military said the operation was ongoing and had been undertaken once it had been ascertained that the camps had produced the gunmen behind the attack on the Coptic Christians in Minya, southern Egypt, on Friday morning.

On Saturday, the Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack, saying in an online statement that it had been carried out by one of its affiliates.

Video interviews with survivors of a deadly attack by Islamic militants on a bus taking Egyptian Christians to a remote desert monastery are painting a picture of untold horror, with children hiding under their seats to escape gunfire.

The Interior Ministry said the assailants opened fire as the bus traveled to the St. Samuel the Confessor monastery in Maghagha, about 220 kilometers (140 miles) south of Cairo.

The air strikes have gone down well with residents in the capital.

The attack came on the eve of the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

"Terrorists are engaged in a war against civilization, and it is up to all who value life to confront and defeat this evil", Trump said in a statement after the terrorist attack in Egypt.

"There is no difference between terrorism harming Egypt and terrorism harming other countries". The president told Pope Towadros II, leader of the Coptic church in Egypt, that the state would not rest easy until the perpetrators of the attack were punished.

Egypt's Copts, the Middle East's largest Christian community, account for about 10 percent of the country's 93 million people.

In April, at least 45 people were killed and more than 100 wounded in two separate suicide bomb attacks on churches in the cities of Tanta and Alexandria during Palm Sunday ceremonies. In December, a suicide bomber targeted a Cairo church.
