Pope "terrific", Saudi "spectacular": Trump waxes lyrical on foreign tour

May 29, 2017, 04:21

We had no idea Pope Francis had it in him: The shade heard 'round the Vatican took place earlier today, as Donald Trump headed to Rome for the third leg of his very first global tour.

It was a meeting of two men with a hard history.

Pope Francis also gave Mr Trump a signed copy of his 2017 peace message, whose title is "Non-violence - A Style Of Politics For Peace", and a copy of his 2015 encyclical on the need to protect the environment from the effects of climate change.

Trump gave Pope Francis a first-edition set of Martin Luther King Jr.'s writings, including all five of his books: "Stride Toward Freedom", "The Measure of a Man", "The Strength to Love", "Why We Can't Wait", and "Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community?" "It's a warning, I will read it", Trump was quoted as saying by local media.

Vatican rules require women who have an audience with the Pope to wear long sleeves, formal black clothing and a veil over their heads.

MALCOLM BRABANT: President Trump's take on his meeting with Pope Francis differs greatly from the interpretation of veteran Vatican analysts.

"More determined than ever to pursue PEACE."

The president looked thrilled and a little mischievous; the pope looked frustrated and bored; the first lady and Ivanka looked like they were attending a wake.

Trump responded: "We can use peace".

Despite her husband being inaugurated United States president in January, she is not due to move into the White House until the summer.

These have included Francis calling Trump's border wall plans "not Christian" and the billionaire tycoon suggesting the pope might be glad to have him in charge if the Islamic State group attacked the Vatican.

While there were smiles and an exchange of pleasantries between the pontiff and the Trumps during their visit to the Vatican Wednesday, it's a snap shot by the Associated Press that has tickled the internet.

At the time Trump called the pope "disgraceful" for doubting his faith. "One image in particular, of a grinning Trump next to a stone-faced Pope Francis, has gone viral". Have you confronted them about it? He even made a light-hearted jest, asking Melania Trump "What do you feed him, putizza?"- a reference to a dessert from her native Slovenia.
