Trump makes G-7 deal on trade, takes rain check on climate

May 29, 2017, 04:19

If that holds, Trump will break with presidential precedent by not holding at least one lengthy question-and-answer session with the press while overseas.

After the pomp of presidential travel overseas, Trump will return to Washington and numerous problems he left behind. The summit's communique noted that the Trump administration would take more time to consider whether it will remain committed to the 2015 Paris deal to rein in greenhouse gas emissions. "But he stands in stark isolation". This is unfortunate for the world, but it's even worse for the U.S.

"There is one open question, which is the USA position on the Paris climate accords", Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni said at the Group of Seven summit in Italy on Friday.

Putting a positive spin on it Emmanuel Macron said he was sure Trump, who he praised as "pragmatist", would back the deal having listened to his G7 counterparts. "Meeting the Paris Agreement's temperature limitation goals is in the environmental, economic and national security interests of the United States, whereas President Trump's "climate inaction plan" is a threat to every American's health and future prosperity". "We're all trying to get to the right place and be respectful of each other".

Trump, who once said the concept of global warming "was created by and for the Chinese in order to make US manufacturing non-competitive", repeatedly vowed to pull out of the Paris deal during his election campaign, but has sidestepped the issue since taking office. Mr Trump tweeted, referring to the global pact on curbing carbon emissions that he vowed to jettison when campaigning for the White House.

However, the USA has refused to recommit to the agreement, saying it will make a decision next week.

Advocates for stronger action to confront climate change said the message from the joint statement was that Trump remained unconvinced of the accord's value. If he does pull the USA out of the agreement, it would be Trump's most drastic move yet to undo the environmental policies of his predecessor.

EU Council President Donald Tusk called this weekend's gathering "the most hard G7 summit", because Trump arrived seeking to reverse prior positions held by the United States.

But at the tense meeting, trust between the US president and the other leaders was not renewed.

A US withdrawal from the 197-nation Paris Agreement could undermine worldwide efforts to limit climate change. And then there was the chat among the G7 leaders.

Trump was referring to a vow by North Atlantic Treaty Organisation countries to move toward spending 2 percent of their gross domestic product on defense by 2024.

The December 2015 deal has as of this month been signed by all 197 countries in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change except two: Syria and Nicaragua.
