Graham: Withdrawing from Paris deal would be bad for GOP

May 30, 2017, 05:38

Under Trump, who once called climate change a "hoax" perpetrated by China, Washington has resisted intense pressure from its partners to commit to respecting the global 2015 accord on curbing carbon emissions. But Gary Cohn, Trump's economic advisor, on Friday said the president had told his G7 colleagues that he regarded the environment as important.

A summit of the leaders of the world's wealthiest democracies has ended without a unanimous agreement on climate change, as the Trump administration plans to take more time to say whether the U.S.is going to remain in the Paris climate deal.

Leaders of the G-7 countries-Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States-and representatives of the European Union met this week in Italy to discuss paramount global issues.

Axios is reporting that President Trump has "told multiple people, including EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt" that the USA will pull out of the Paris climate change agreement, based on conversations with "three sources with direct knowledge".

German Chancellor Angela Merkel told reporters on the Italian island "the entire discussion about climate was very hard, if not to say very unsatisfying", while Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni, said: "I hope they [the US] decide in the right way".

The German chancellor spoke following the G7 summit, in which leaders failed to agree unanimously on climate change after United States president Donald Trump said he needed more time to decide whether to back a key climate accord.

Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni, who chaired the meeting, said the other six "won't change our position on climate change one millimeter".

Mattis was interviewed before Axios news outlet reported that Trump had told several "confidants" - including EPA chief Scott Pruitt - that he was pulling the USA out of the landmark climate change accord.

But, Meyer continues, "he stands in stark isolation, as the leaders from Europe, Canada, and Japan have made it crystal clear they intend to fully implement their national commitments under the Paris Agreement and pursue efforts to decarbonize the global economy".

Trump retained the option of pulling out of the treaty altogether or, more likely, scaling back on the specific commitments made by the Obama administration. The U.S., however, which was part of the accord originally, did not signal renewed support for the agreement.

In a statement, Gary Cohn, one of Trump's senior economic advisors, said the talks in Taormina were having an impact on the USA president.

"He came here to learn, he came here to get smarter and he came here to hear people's views". White House adviser Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump, the president's son-in-law and daughter, have joined Tillerson in advocating staying.

The reaction came after Trump said that the final decision on the ratification of climate deal would be decided next week.

In order to do that, countries pledged to reduce their carbon emissions.

"What a ridiculous situation", Trump said in the post.
