Trump meets Pope, calls it an 'honour'

May 31, 2017, 05:27

As a symbol of the increased respect for the head of the Catholic Church, now both Trump's personal and presidential Twitter accounts display an image of him sitting across from Pope Francis, smiling. "And we will win this fight", Trump said. This isn't new with the Trumps, for that matter; it's the same standthat Michelle Obama, Laura Bush, and Hillary Clinton-who all covered their heads for the pope, but not for the Saudis-took before them. When greeting the first lady, Pope Francis asked, "What are you feeding him, potica?" But Francis underscored his concern by including among his gifts to Trump a copy of a document he has written denouncing human contributions to climate change.

So now that we'll be off of Melania Trump, let's get onto Donald Trump meeting Pope Francis for the first time.

"Honor of a lifetime to meet His Holiness Pope Francis".

In the past year, Pope Francis and Mr Trump have swopped jibes and debated on subjects ranging from migration to unbridled capitalism, as well as the environment.

The pope handed out rosaries to members of the delegation before the group posed for pictures following which the Pope bid farewell to the president and his wife.

"We can use peace", Trump commented. "Thank you. I won't forget what you said". Other women who were accompanying Melania, including Ivanka Trump, also wore black dresses and veils.

Pope Francis gave the president a split medallion held together by an olive tree, which his interpreter told Trump is "a symbol of peace". He will meet the pontiff at the Vatican early Wednesday where the two will have a private audience laden with religious symbolism and ancient protocol.

The president and pope have not always seen eye to eye.

The two men had never met before Wednesday morning but they have significant history having clashed publicly over subjects ranging from migration to unbridled capitalism and climate change.

While in Italy, Trump also met with Italian President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni.

Significant protests are also expected in Brussels where he will meet European Union and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation officials.

The president is midway through a grueling nine-day, maiden global journey that has included Middle East stops in the cradles of Islam and Judaism.

Ivanka and Jared were a constant presence at Trump's side in Israel. Climate change activists projected the words "Planet Earth First" on the dome of St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican on Tuesday night, and protests are expected when he attends the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation meeting in Brussels and the G-7 gathering in Sicily.
