Trump repeats criticism of Germany, Merkel stands by stance

May 31, 2017, 05:26

Germany unleashed a volley of criticism Monday against US President Donald Trump, slamming his "short-sighted" policies that have "weakened the West" and hurt European interests.

"But Germany also bought $80.4 billion worth of American goods and services previous year, more than was purchased by any other European country other than the United Kingdom".

"The times when we could fully count on others are over to a certain extent. Us to take our destiny in our own hands", she said, stressing that "Europe must become a player active in global affairs". "German business and industry is important partner in achievements of India's economic priorities", he added.

Germany's startling assessment came after Trump's first tour overseas, when he snubbed pressure from G7 allies to sign up to upholding the 2015 Paris climate accord.

Her spokesman, Steffen Seibert, told reporters Merkel felt it was right to flag differences in Germany's ties with the United States in order to maintain healthy relations. "Trump accelerates it, but it was to be expected".

Merkel, who concluded her speech by taking a drink from an oversized beer glass, added that while she would attempt to remain on friendly terms with all nations - "even Russia" - in the end, the citizens of the European Union would need to shape their own fate. How significant do you think her remarks are?

APPLEBAUM: I think Merkel will have experienced it not quite as a shock but as a confirmation of some of her worst fears about who Trump is and what his attitude towards Europe might be.

The Social Democrat leader then said it did not matter that Merkel and he were in the middle of an election campaign, as "the chancellor represents all of us at summits like these, and I reject with outrage the way this man takes it upon himself to treat the head of our country's government". "Particularly in view of the complexity of global contexts, a wish for simple answers spreads". And that was what she was telling her German audience. "And above all else, we must not submit to Trump's arms-race logic".

Trump has vowed to decide this week whether to pull the USA out of the Paris framework on climate change but left his counterparts in the G7 with no idea of which way he was leaning.

"Here is a situation where it's six, seven if you include the European Union, against one", she said. Our friendship with the U.S., the United Kingdom, our neighborly relationship with Russian Federation and also with other countries count, of course.

Trump did not hold a news conference after the summit but later tweeted that he would make his "final decision" on the Paris accord this week.

On a day when German Chancellor Angela Merkel described India as a "reliable partner" in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in her country, US President Donald Trump blasted her over trade and defense related issues.

The prime minister praised Merkel's "strong leadership" and said a EU-focused vision is what the world needed.
