Dozens Killed, Hundreds Injured In Kabul Bombing

Jun 01, 2017, 00:43

Germany has postponed a flight of rejected Afghan asylum seekers, after a bomb in Kabul killed at least 80 people. Afghanistan's health ministry says over 300 people were injured.

There has been no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack - although the Taliban have denied involvement, making it more likely Isis is to blame.

On Wednesday morning a truck bomb exploded in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan. The neighborhood is home to several embassies and not far from the Presidential Palace and foreign ministry.

The BBC has confirmed that BBC Afghan driver Mohammed Nazir, who had worked with the broadcaster for four years and had a young family, died in the blast.

France also reported damage to its own embassy and the German one, but there was no information on possible casualties.

August 7, 2015 - A series of attacks kill at least 44 people and wound over 300 in one day in Kabul.

A similar attack took place in Kabul in July 1016, when two explosions went off during a demonstration by members of Afghanistan's mainly Shi'ite Hazara minority, who had been protesting the planned route of a multi-million-dollar powerline.

Some parents rushed to the school as news of the blast spread, causing more panic and hampering the rescue and relief efforts, officials said.

The responsibility for the attack was later claimed by the ISIS terrorist group, according to Al Mayadeen TV.

A statement to the Associated Press from the Afghan Ministry of Interior Affairs condemned "in the strongest terms the terrorist attack" that killed so many Afghan civilians.

There are about 8,400 United States troops in Afghanistan - a majority of them are involved in training and advising Afghan troops.

Afghanistan's private TOLO Television also reported a staffer killed; Germany said an Afghan security guard outside its embassy was among the dead.

Residents described a mushroom cloud over Kabul and windows were shattered in shops, restaurants and other buildings up to a kilometer (half mile) from the blast site.
