Kaprawi: 'Disruptive passenger' on Melbourne-KL flight was drunk

A Malaysian Airlines plane was forced to return to Melbourne airport after a passenger tried to enter the cockpit, Flight MH128 was destined for Kuala Lumpur.

In a statement, Malaysia Airlines confirmed a "disruptive passenger" had tried to enter the cockpit.

The aircraft was sent to a remote bay where the "disruptive" passenger was apprehended by airport security, the airline said.

Malaysia Airlines said the passengers would be put up at hotels and offered another flight.

Malaysia's deputy transport minister, Abdul Aziz Kaprawi, said the passenger claimed to have a bomb even though it was later found that "it was not a bomb but a powerbank", The Independent reported.

The wife of another man who was on the plane said passengers and crew helped to tie the aggressive passenger down after he attacked an air hostess.

The passengers made it safely onto the tarmac, where they were given blankets as the emergency services continued working.

"It is alleged that a man tried to enter the cockpit and threatened the safety of passengers and staff", said Victoria Police Senior Constable Adam West.

The flight landed back in Melbourne just 30 minutes after its scheduled take-off.

"Safety and security are of utmost priority to malaysia airlines".

Donna, the girlfriend of one of the passengers on board flight MH128, alerted 3AW to the incident on board the plane shortly after 11pm last night over concerns police didn't act swiftly enough.

The man was overpowered by passengers but armed police entered the plane to make sure everything was okay.

All other flights were diverted to Avalon, near Geelong, with Melbourne Airport in lockdown at the time.

Local media reports suggest he claimed to have explosives.

In a few months after MH370 went missing, Flight MH17 from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur was shot down in eastern Ukraine.

The man was later arrested by airport security personnel and Malaysia Airlines will be investigating the incident with Australian authorities. "The airline wishes to apologise for the inconvenience caused", the airline said.
