Mr Met gives fan the finger, employee done with mascot duty

Jun 02, 2017, 01:51

Now, the Mets' non-talking mascot is flipping off customers during a blowout loss at home.

Mr. Met flipped out (no pun intended) on a fan who may or may not have been harassing him following the Mets' 7-1 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers at Citi Field, and oh boy, was it a good meltdown.

The video soon went viral, and the Mets organization tweeted out an apology.

The Mets said the offending employee would not be the mascot again and that someone else filled the role for this game. "We do not condone this type of behavior", according to the Mets.

Mr. Met is going to have to lay low for a little while. "We are dealing with this matter internally", they posted to their own Twitter account.

Mr. Met is not happy with his team's lackluster season so far. His Twitter account has almost 50,000 followers.

Mr. Mets has been around for more than five decades, long popular with Mets fans for his oversized head with baseball seams. The team dismissed the specific Mr. Met portrayer whose glove flicked off those jeering fans at the home team's already disastrous contest against the Milwaukee Brewers.

New "Jersey" Guys podcast co-host Chris Swendeman couldn't recall another similar incident with an area team mascot, but said the Phillie Phanatic has had some legal trouble.

Loopholes aside, the incident Wednesday is the latest embarrassment for the Mets, who have had to deal with numerous off-field issues this season, in addition to injuries to core players such as Yoenis Cespedes, Noah Syndergaard, Steven Matz and Jeurys Familia. Suffice it to say, the team can not promote Tim Tebow to the big leagues soon enough.
