Spicer Offers Cryptic Explanation for Trump 'Covfefe' Tweet

Jun 02, 2017, 01:47

The White House is keeping America guessing about the meaning-if there is any-of President Donald Trump's enigmatic overnight tweet about "covfefe" that immediately shot to meme stardom.

It's possible that in the future, there will be fewer press briefings led by White House communications staff, and instead there will be more press conferences with President Trump himself.

The spokesman's refusal to admit Trump made a mistake prompted laughter from members of the media at the White House.

Trump administration officials also wouldn't say what type of mobile phone the US President was using or describe any security upgrades it might include.

In creating a separate entity to handle the Russian Federation fallout, the White House hopes existing staffers can return their focus to executing the President's agenda, which has largely stalled as aides and advisers work to respond to the Russian Federation story.

The press briefing today was off-camera, so we can only guess at what Spicer's facial expression was when he answered the "covfefe" question.

They seem to be the only people in the world who do know what Trump meant, when he tweeted: "Despite the constant negative press covfefe".

A majority of 53% said Pence does more to help the President - just 29% said he does more harm when he speaks on behalf of Trump.

He chafes at reports suggesting Trump is planning to shake up the communications team because he isn't satisfied with Spicer's performance.

The New York City litigator was retained by Trump last week to represent the president in all matters concerning the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

Donald Trump's latest Twitter salvo was perhaps his most confusing to date.

"We are so easily distracted by the little things, if it is a little thing", Bierbauer, a former president of the White House Correspondents" Association, told VOA. "When you have a president who is not as soft and sweet as maybe the Europeans and more rough and tumble and American style, they don't take kindly to it".

Despite the ground rule imposed Wednesday, the 11-minute briefing was aired live by some cable networks, in which one-fourth of the session was consumed by Spicer reading prepared announcements. "Is no one watching this?" the reporter wondered.
