Trump breaks campaign promise by not moving US Embassy to Jerusalem

Jun 02, 2017, 01:48

The Palestinians praised Mr Trump's decision, saying it strengthens the chances of peace.

Zomlot says: "We are ready to start the consultation process with the USA administration". Abbas, for his part, assured Trump that "we are raising our youth, our children, our grandchildren on a culture of peace". Therefore, a near-future Palestinian state would nearly certainly become an adversarial nation that promotes and finances Islamic terrorism.

"The American embassy, like all other embassies, should be in Jerusalem", as the city is Israel's "eternal capital", the statement said. "It would advance it by amending a historic wrong and by shattering the Palestinian fantasy that Jerusalem isn't the capital of Israel", Netanyahu said.

The 1995 Jerusalem Embassy Act requires the U.S. Embassy to move to Jerusalem, but every president since then has signed a six-month waiver delaying the decision.

The pro-Western kingdom had warned that such a move was a "red line" that it would bolster extremists if crossed.

In six days of war, Israel's army seized 5,900 square kilometers of the West Bank, the walled Old City of Jerusalem and more than two dozen Arab villages on the city's eastern flank. Israeli media has reported that Trump allegedly scolded the Palestinian leader and accused him of acting in bad faith.

Earlier this year, the president promised to move the embassy, which is a move supported by Israelis. "Think about how upsetting to us it is that the USA doesn't recognize Jerusalem as our capital". Steinitz is a confidant of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

"The question is does making this move prejudice" the peace process, the official said. Everybody recognizes Israel as the capital of Israel. They haven't wanted to take sides on the issue, so they've kept their embassies in the Tel Aviv area. However, Nathan Thrall, the International Crisis Group's senior analyst on Israel/Palestine, speculated that Netanyahu may actually want the embassy to remain in Tel Aviv for now.

Earlier in the day, Trump renewed a waiver that will temporarily keep the United States embassy in Tel Aviv instead of moving it to Jerusalem, which Israel considers its capital city. Spicer says, "The question is not if that move happens, but only when".

On Thursday, the waiver came up for renewal for the first time on Trump's watch, and he followed the example of Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama before him in instructing his secretary of state to hold off on the move.

"We are disappointed the President chose at this time to sign the Jerusalem Embassy Act waiver but remain hopeful that he will fulfill his campaign pledge and move the US Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem", said Christians United for Israel in a statement.
