Man arrested for theft of Portland stabbing victim's wedding ring, backpack

An unidentified man took the backpack and wedding ring of Portland train attack victim Ricky Best, who was fatally stabbed by a white nationalist on the MAX train on May 26.

The department released surveillance video showing the theft suspect departing from the train after the stabbings.

Portland Police have released an image of a man they say carried Mr Best's backpack from the scene.

The backpack contained "personal items important to the Best family", detectives said in a statement. Tschaggeny faces three charges, including theft in the second degree, tampering with physical evidence and abuse of a corpse in the second degree.

Candles with photos of Taliesin Namkai-Meche, right, and Ricky Best on them are shown at a memorial for the two men in Portland, Ore., Wednesday, May 31, 2017.

Tschaggeny was found wearing Best's ring, which he apparently had removed from Best's finger after the stabbing, said police spokesman Pete Simpson.

A wallet from inside the backpack is still missing, Best's son, Eric, told KOIN 6 News. Best died on the train and another victim died at a hospital.

Authorities also recovered Best's missing backpack, although officers said some items, like the Army veteran's wallet, were missing. Once arrested, Christian made shocking statements when he was put in the back of a police auto equipped with audio and video recording devices, according to an affidavit released Tuesday. Prosecutors said Jeremy Joseph is accused of attacking them after they confronted him for harassing two young black women, one of whom wore a Muslim head covering. I understand that is no measure against their grief. He has yet to enter a plea on charges of aggravated murder and other crimes.
