Walmart testing store employee delivery of US online orders

The program is now being tested out in three stores; two in New Jersey and one in Arkansas, with staff participation in the new scheme voluntary.

The grandiose event brought Walmart executives, employees, partners, investors and even celebrities, like singers, songwriters and The Voice hosts Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton, under one roof to discuss the company's recent progress and where it still needs work.

The program is being tested at locations in Arkansas and New Jersey.

According to Walmart's blog, their stores in the USA put the company within 10 miles of 90 percent of the US population.

Marc Lore, CEO of Walmart's USA online operations, wrote on the company website, "It just makes sense: We already have trucks moving orders from fulfillment centers to stores for pickup". Wal-Mart declined to say whether participating store workers get paid a fee for the delivery or simply more for the extra hours.

Walmart, which employes about 1.5 million workers in its 4,700 U.S. stores, said it "just makes sense" for them to deliver packages on the way home as 90% of Americans live within 10 miles of one of its stores.

Lore did not give details on when, or where, it may expand across the United States.

"This is completely an opt-in program", he said. "This is not something they are required to do". At a time when so many retailers are laying off staff, and there is a feeling of disenfranchisement among associates, this is a great way of getting them engaged to promote positive customer experiences. And, if so, that defeats the goal of them completing the delivery as part of their normal commute home.

"It just makes sense", said Marc Lore, CEO of Wal-Mart's e-commerce division.

The move could result in significant cost savings, though the company didn't provide estimates of how much.

About Wal-Mart Stores Wal-Mart Stores, Inc is engaged in the operation of retail, wholesale and other units in various formats around the world. It also lets customers buy groceries online and pick them up at stores and offers discounts to online shoppers who pick up items at stores rather than having them delivered.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc (NYSE:WMT) employees may deliver your next online order on their way home from work.

Faster shipping has become a key area of competition as online retail continues to grow at a double-digit pace, while traditional brick-and-mortar stores struggle with falling sales. It's also announced a two-day shipping guarantee for any order over $35 - an answer to a similar deal included in Amazon Prime membership. Jariwala said that test is still going on.

Lore added: "Unlike crowdsourced delivery, where the driver has to travel (often out of the way) to pick up the package, then drive the full distance to deliver it, our associates are starting at the same place as the packages".

The delivery destinations will be close to where a worker lives or on the way to that person's home.
