Comey Said to Stop Short of Saying Whether Trump Obstructed Justice

Jun 07, 2017, 10:50

The comment came during a meeting with congressional leadership, including House Speaker Paul Ryan, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn, where the group is slated to discuss Trump's stalled agenda on Capitol Hill.

According to Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Richard Burr, Comey has received clearance from special counsel Robert Mueller to testify in an open session.

The refrain is a common one for Trump, who said the same thing about Comey during a January reception for law enforcement at the White House.

Comey did not disclose to Sessions that Mr. Trump had requested that he end the investigation into Flynn, the Times reported, and Comey didn't tell a single official at the Justice Department about his conversation with Mr. Trump, sharing the conversation only with his closest advisers.

"He's become more famous than me", the President joked before beckoning Comey over and giving him a warm handshake.

Comey's communications with the attorney general raises new questions about Sessions' role last month in recommending the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director be dismissed in the midst of the Russian Federation inquiry.

The Justice Department announced the Georgia woman's arrest Monday as The Intercept reported that it had obtained a classified report suggesting Russian hackers attacked a USA voting software supplier days before last year's presidential election.

However, Comey does plan to dispute Trump's claim made in the letter announcing Comey's termination that Comey told him on three separate occasions that he was not under investigation.

Comey is scheduled to testify Thursday before the Senate intelligence committee beginning at 10 a.m. that day.

In a memo prepared for Trump's consideration, Rosenstein cited Comey's disputed handling of the investigation into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server as secretary of State as grounds for his dismissal.

Justice Department spokesman Ian Prior declined to comment.

"You're going to have senators who probably challenge Comey to some extent because they don't like what he's done in the past", Hosko said.

Yet Trump days later told NBC in an interview that the Russian Federation investigation was indeed on his mind when he made the decision to fire Comey.

White House officials appear eager to keep the president away from television and Twitter Thursday, though those efforts rarely succeed.
