Contractor charged in leaking NSA document to media

The hackers are believed to have then used data from that operation to create a new email account to launch a spear-phishing campaign targeting US local government organizations, the document said.

The "Top Secret" National Security Agency (NSA) report, which was published online by The Intercept, does not say whether the hacking had any effect on election results.

According to the document, Russian military intelligence launched an attack on at least one USA voting-software supplier and sent so-called spear-phishing emails to at least 100 local election officials shortly before the election.

Reality Winner, 25, was arrested over the weekend and formally charged Monday with removing classified material from a government facility and mailing it to an unidentified news outlet, the Justice Department announced afterwards.

Golden posted a photo with victor the day after Memorial Day in 2016 previous year, calling her "a living hero".

An Air Force veteran with a love of CrossFit, yoga and veganism, Winner's online profiles display a disciplined and mannered lifestyle.

CNN reported that victor, who had worked at a government facility outside Augusta since February 13, had top secret security clearance.

"She's never ever given me any kind of indication that she was in favour of that at all", her mother said regarding Ms Winner's stance on leaking.

As Derek Hawkins of The Post explained, Winner, an Air Force veteran working for a defense contractor in Georgia, allegedly made it easy for the Federal Bureau of Investigation to track her down. She is reportedly fluent in Farsi, Dari and Pashto.

But it's what wasn't seen that outed victor as the alleged leaker.

Winner-Davis described her daughter as "passionate" about her beliefs.

In the continuing investigation into Trump's potential collusion with Russian Federation during the presidential election, a woman named Reality Leigh Winner is being accused of sharing intelligence with the media from her position in the NSA and has now been arrested for it.

Not sure. Posting under the pseudonym Sara Winners, Ms Winner often criticised Donald Trump on social media. Nicholas Weaver, a security researcher at the University of California, Berkeley, said on Twitter, using the acronym for "top secret".

U.S. intelligence agencies declined to comment.

The risk for the intelligence community, Leetaru said, is "a young person starting off sees something they don't like, and they don't have the same respect and believe in the notion of secrecy and classification".

How did Reality Winner get caught?

"The FBI said in their documents that victor ".admitted intentionally identifying and printing the classified intelligence reporting from her office space, retaining it, and mailing it from Augusta, Georgia, to the News Outlet, which she knew was not authorized to receive or possess the documents". She ultimately admitted "intentionally identifying and printing the classified intelligence reporting at issue" when interviewed Saturday at her home in Augusta, Georgia, according to the affidavit. But in the affidavit, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said it began investigating just last Thursday - after a news outlet contacted the government saying it had received the document anonymously and was working on a story. With that information, the GRU sent fraudulent emails to 122 government election officials around the country in hopes of tricking one of them.

"On or about May 9, 2017, victor printed and improperly removed classified intelligence reporting, which contained classified national defense information and was dated on or about May 5, 2017 (the "intelligence reporting") from an Intelligence Community Agency (the "U.S. Government Agency") and unlawfully retained it".
