DUP to support minority Tory government after 'confidence and supply' deal reached

Jun 12, 2017, 09:40

"Theresa May is a dead woman walking".

In a dramatic U-turn Theresa Mays team then put out another statement late last night, saying: "The Prime Minister has tonight spoken with the DUP to discuss finalising a confidence and supply deal when Parliament returns next week". The main opposition Labour Party took 262.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said he could still be prime minister, although his party has no obvious way to build a majority coalition.

Within the two years of talks, Britain wants to not only agree on the terms of its exit but also negotiate a new relationship on things like trade and security.

Asked whether a delay in the start of the Brexit talks, scheduled for June 19, was possible, Flanagan said: "I'm conscious of the fact that this clock is ticking".

After confirming on Friday that her top five ministers would keep their jobs, including Chancellor Philip Hammond, May is expected to continue to appoint the government that will take on one of the most demanding negotiations in British history.

The Democratic Unionist Party, which won 10 seats in Thursday's voting, emerged as the most likely partner to form a coalition government.

Joint chiefs of staff Nick Timothy and Fiona Hill formed part of May's small inner circle and were blamed by many Conservatives for the party's lackluster campaign and unpopular election platform, which alienated older voters with its plan to make them pay more for long-term care.

British Prime Minister Theresa May secured a deal on Saturday to prop up her minority government but looked increasingly isolated after a botched election gamble plunged Britain into crisis days before the start of talks on leaving the EU.

A senior Conservative MP is in Belfast on Saturday for talks with the DUP, a spokesperson for Ms May's office said.

"I think we need a change".

The current leader of the DUP is Arlene Foster. "Just to be clear, we will act in the national interest".

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said she had lost all legitimacy and called on her to stand aside and allow him to form an alternative administration, declaring: "We are ready to serve".

"I do believe it's important we have certainty", Flanagan told ITV.

"It remains to be seen what the nature of that deal is".

One-time Obama senior adviser David Axelrod said in an interview with the former president that the "Labor Party just sort of disintegrated in the face of their [2015] defeat and move so far left that it's, you know, in a very - in a very frail state", calling the process "Corbynization".

She also reiterated that she would seek a reciprocal agreement early in the talks on rights of European Union and British citizens, Downing Street said.

With the DUP providing the Conservatives a narrow, but crucial, majority in Parliament, it could have an outsized influence.

Johnson is one of the most recognisable figures in British politics thanks to his shock of platinum blonde hair and colourful turn of phrase - attributes that made him a key asset for the Brexit campaign during last year's European Union referendum.

The Conservatives could command a thin majority with the support of the DUP if they manage to to do a deal with the Northern Irish party.

Britain's typically right-wing press savaged May over the election outcome, questioning whether she will be able to remain in power after a result that leaves her reliant on uniting rival factions within her party to deliver Brexit. J.K. Rowling, the prominent author of the Harry Potter series of novels, predicted previous year that Corbyn would bring about "the destruction of the Labour Party".

Many of those Conservatives now opposing May are those who wanted to remain in the EU.

Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson has told Prime Minister Theresa May exactly what she thinks about the Democratic Unionist Party's (DUP) opposition to gay marriage. There's already speculation that foreign minister and former London mayor Boris Johnson could mount a challenge to May or succeed her in the event she resigns.

Even loyal supporters talked openly on Sunday about how May needed to change her leadership style, in particular her reliance on a tight-knit circle of advisers. "Without it, I don't see how we govern with any confidence".
