AG Rosenstein sees no reason to fire Mueller

Jun 14, 2017, 05:41

Lindsey Graham, Rosenstein said that having given political donations is not a disqualifier.

Despite the uneven quality of the various committees, it's worth taking a step back to marvel that even some committees in the Republican-held Congress are conducting aggressive and politically damaging investigations of a Republican president in the first months of his administration.

Mnuchin's idea of a "good shutdown" MORE (R-Wis.) and House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) expressed frustration at the media on Tuesday after reporters asked four questions about the possibility President Trump may fire Robert Mueller, the special counsel leading the FBI's Russian Federation investigation.

Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, asked Rosenstein if he would fire Mueller if Trump asked him to. "I think it's just a way of raising doubts about this very good man who's respected by people on both sides of the aisle". Under the regulation, special counsel Mueller may be fired only for good cause.

In his Senate testimony last week, Comey said Trump requested loyalty from him and asked that he drop an investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

"Mueller looks to me like someone who's got some great measure now of immunity given to him by the deputy attorney general".

"I know what we're investigating and he does not", Rosenstein said to Sen.

His impassioned response came after Senate Democrats raised questions about whether Sessions privately met with Sergey Kislyak at an April 2016 foreign policy event at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington.

Democratic senators on the committee attempted to clarify the boundaries of Sessions' recusal, something they say is unclear.

Rosenstein said "no, I have not", when asked by Shaheen whether he has seen good cause to fire Mueller.

After initially being praised by Republicans and Democrats for his integrity, in recent days Mueller's impartiality as special counsel has been questioned by some Trump supporters.

They say Trump did not collude with Russian Federation and see the investigation as a politically motivated sham that handicaps Trump's ability to execute his agenda, according to one person who advises the White House on how to handle the probe. Sessions told senators on Tuesday that he'd recused himself because he was part of Trump's campaign. "If there were not good cause, it wouldn't matter to me what anybody says".

"We're focusing on the VA and healthcare, and you're creating a rumor that is not happening", he said. "I have confidence in Bob Mueller".

Session will also testify before the House later Tuesday, scheduled to discuss the department budget. "So nobody else in the department will have the authority to do that", said Rosenstein.

Rosenstein told the Senate Intelligence Committee that he's seen no reason why Mueller should be fired.

"We are focused on solving people's problems", he said.

The night before Tuesday's senate intelligence committee hearing with Attorney General Jeff Sessions, the sudden question of whether President Donald Trump might fire Federal Bureau of Investigation special counsel Robert Mueller prompted alarm from Democrats and notes of caution from Republicans.

Schiff told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" that if Trump fired Mueller, Congress might name its own independent counsel to investigate the case. "I think he's weighing that option".
