Apple To Disallow Custom Prompts For App Ratings

Jun 15, 2017, 01:24

Apple has modified its App Store policies and will now allow tipping for content publishers through in-app purchases, reports TechCrunch. App names are now limited to 30 characters - down from 50 - and these shortened titles can now be supplemented with a subtitle.

With Today's tab, App store editors will be pushing content as part of "Daily Stories" with a new app and game featured as the App of the day along with new lists and other content.

Notably, the App Store saw downloads increase by more than 70% over the past year, according to Philip Schiller, Apple's SVP of worldwide marketing.

The other problem is Apple's relatively new app advertising system, App Store Search Ads, which Lin found several scam apps abusing.

The app offers services which are essentially unnecessary, such as an iOS antivirus and malware scanning service. To quantify it, Lin went to the App Store and looked at the Productivity category.

The notion that something like this appears in the App Store - which Apple is supposed to keep close tabs on - is noting short of infuriating and inexcusable.

Not all developers out there want your birth certificate and bathing schedule, but enough have proven themselves less than scrupulous over the years, so anything Apple and Google do to help users limit data collection and location tracking is always welcome. While, Apple does provide an RSS feed for this feature, it will be interesting to see if they continue offering this feed after the iOS 11 launch. The publication noted that this was instituted as a number of Chinese live-streaming apps like Yinke and Yizhibo allow content publishers to get tips via virtual currencies.

The new App Review guidelines compel developers to use the official in-app rating UI that was added in iOS 10.3, and plans to "disallow custom review prompts" in the future.

"These are the exact sort of apps that the App Store review process should be primarily looking to block", Gruber wrote on his Daring Fireball blog in response to Lin's research. The leading business also released updates to its App store policies which officially designates voluntary tipping through virtual payments.

Even better than that, the app developers themselves will be able to figure out how much the content creators get out of that tip money. So, if that is the case, how on earth did a fraudulent app like this make it into the App Store in the first place?
