Trump gives remarks on ballfield shooting

Jun 15, 2017, 01:26

Rep. Jared Huffman, a Democrat who represents California's north coast, said he and other members of the Democratic baseball team were practicing at a separate facility when they heard the news of the shooting.

CBS News has confirmed the gunman at the congressional baseball practice has been identified by law enforcement as James T. Hodgkinson, 66, of Belleville, Illinois.

Trump says in a televised statement from the White House that while the political parties may have their differences, it's worth remembering that everyone who serves in Washington is here because they love the United States.

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise was among the shooting victims.

"Authorities are continuing to investigate the crime, and the assailant has now died from his injuries", Trump said.

US President Donald Trump released a statement on Wednesday in which he said himself and VP Mike Pence were aware of the attack.

The shooter died in custody as a result of wounds he suffered during a shootout with police following the incident, President Trump said in a brief statement.

The White House also canceled a "listening session" on tax reform with top economic adviser Gary Cohn and auto industry leaders.

"Scalise was on second base, and was crawling out, leaving a trail of blood", said Rep. Mo Brooks, R-Ala., in an interview on CNN, describing it as a "hip wound". His wounds were not believed to be life-threatening.
