One of escaped inmates caught just miles from hometown

Jun 17, 2017, 04:21

The men initially wanted to make the elderly woman drive as their hostage, but when her vehicle failed to start they stole the couple's Jeep instead.

According to the FBI, Ricky Dubose, 24, and Donnie Rowe, 43, who were on the run since Tuesday, were spotted in Shelbyville, Tennessee on Thursday morning.

It was the first of four cars they stole while trying to elude capture, authorities said.

Rowe and Dubose shared a cell in prison, but authorities had said they couldn't be certain if that is where they hatched their escape plan. A neighbor stepped in to help while authorities arrived on scene.

Authorities have located both of their weapons from the crash site and turned them over to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Mark Gwyn, director of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, said in the news conference. That ended a massive manhunt which spanned multiple states. My honest thanks to our local, state and federal law enforcement officers who assisted in the manhunt.

Putnam County, Georgia, Sheriff Howard Sills said earlier today the public was in "grave danger" and that authorities did not know where the risky inmates were. "They would do a crime and it would escalate".

Reports claimed that Rowe was originally from Lewisburg, Tennessee.

Dubose and Rowe, who had been serving long prison sentences for armed robbery, escaped while on a transport bus in rural Georgia after breaking through the gate separating inmates from guards.

"I feel for (Georgia Sheriff Howard Sills) because of what he's going through with his department", said Fitzhugh.

The inmates were being hunted in the killings Tuesday morning of two prison guards who were overpowered, disarmed and shot to death on a prison bus southeast of Atlanta. "I have their blood on my shoes".

Authorities said the two inmates overpowered and killed Sgt. Christopher Monica and Sgt. Curtis Billue early Tuesday on a bus that should have been secured as it carried inmates between prisons.

The slain Baldwin State Prison officers were Christopher Monica, 42, who was hired in 2009, and Curtis Billue, 58, who was hired in 2007, Georgia Corrections said. Deal mentioned in his statement Thursday night.

The governor said, "We will do everything in our power to support their loved ones, and we will not forget their sacrifice and service".

"Yes, they have been interviewed", Sills said. Monica had worked for the facility for almost eight years after being hired in October of 2009.

The other inmates have been questioned and a camera on the bus recorded the guards being shot, but corrections officials have not explained to the public how the pair managed to get through the inmate compartment's normally locked door.

They then hijacked a Honda Civic, which was discovered hidden in a wooded area on Wednesday, and were believed to have stolen a white Ford pickup truck.

"I think it's a testament to the training, I think it's a testament to our individuals and I think it's a testament to our men and women at the sheriff's office, that they handled themselves very well in a very tight, tough situation".

The two men are suspected of killing prison transfer Sgts.
