Wife: Man who shot congressman wanted to work on tax policy

NPR's Hansi Lo Wang is in Belleville and joins us now.

CORNISH: That's NPR's Hansi Lo Wang in Belleville, Ill.

The shooter was identified as James T. Hodgkinson, 66.

"I can show you messages and stuff that were much worse than this guy's Facebook posts", said Republican Congressman Kenny Marchant, referring to the assailant in Wednesday's shooting.

Sue Hodgkinson stood unsteady and emotional as a local sheriff's deputy held her hand and led her to a bank of several microphones.

Sara Robishaw, a server at Junction Bakery and Bistro, said she began noticing him about three weeks ago, sitting on a bench in front of the Walgreens drugstore across the street from her shop.

"I think that the president contributed to this significantly", said Rep. James Clyburn of SC, the No. 3 House Democrat.

WANG: She got a lot of questions from reporters.

When he left, she said, Hodgkinson told her he was going to Washington, D.C.to "work with people to change the tax brackets". Brennwald thought it was odd he never saw Hodgkinson exercise or wear workout clothes and considered asking a staffer about him but never did, he said. "We now have no evidence to suggest that the purchases were not lawful".

However, there is no evidence so far that he was linked to any radical or violent groups. He let his business license expire and moved to the Washington, DC area in March, where he reportedly lived out of his white cargo van and frequented the YMCA in Alexandria located next to the baseball field. Federal Bureau of Investigation agent Tim Slater said the Federal Bureau of Investigation needs the public's help in piecing together Hodgkinson's whereabouts and activities while he was in Alexandria.

We now have video of the gun battle between law enforcement officers and the GOP baseball shooter. "We try to make sure people are reasonable when doing this". And we know that the shooter was politically active. The charges were eventually dropped. They say that if anyone is encouraging violent action, it is the president himself, who past year said he'll pay the legal fees of supporters who remove protestors from his campaign rallies. Here's what she said.

"He said, 'I understand, ' and said he needed to take the gun to a range to shoot it, Watson said. It disgusts me how they are acting".

Good people gunned down due to their political affiliation.

Throughout the day, Alexandria residents who had had chance encounters with him continued to look back on them. I think that they'll come together for his family.

Following the Giffords shooting, lawmakers have held fewer open town halls and have been advised to increase security at such events.

"We are shocked and saddened by the incident that took place this morning". It's lots of farmland, acres of corn and soybean fields.

When Hodgkinson refused to stop, Schaumleffel called the sheriff's department.

The man suspected of shooting at members of a Republican congressional baseball team in Virginia was, according to his brother, critical of President Trump and upset over the election. It was pretty close.
