The plane landed about 9am local time (01:00 GMT) on Sunday, an hour later than scheduled, according to Xinhua.

"Even in extremely rough air, the wing is not going to break off and the plane is not going to flip upside down", pilot Patrick Smith told Gizmodo.

The plane, also an Airbus A330, was en route from Sydney to Shanghai when passengers and crew smelled something burning. "Clear-air turbulence is especially hard to avoid because it can not be seen by pilots or detected by satellites or onboard radar".
