Ready to face midterm elections, says a defiant Fadnavis

Jun 22, 2017, 05:54

Earlier June 19 afternoon, Sena MP Sanjay Raut said BJP President Amit Shah called Thackeray only after announcing Kovind as its candidate for the July 17 election, indicating that the party was not taken into confidence beforehand.

Shah, along with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, visited Thackeray's residence "Matoshree" and held a closed-door meeting, which started around 10 am and lasted almost 75 minutes. When we asked on whom they want to build consensus, they had no answer then.

Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray on Monday said that if someone is trying to make a Dalit a President with the goal of gaining a vote bank then we are not with them.

BJP president Amit Shah has said his party has been pro-free trade and free agriculture policy since its inception.

The Shiv Sena, which is seen as the BJP's natural ally due to the common Hindutva agenda, in 2007 had supported incumbent Pratibha Patil over the BJP's Bhaironsingh Shekhawat as she was a Maharashtrian.

Later today, Shah is scheduled to meet party MPs, MLAs, state unit office bearers, morcha presidents, presidents of districts and mandals and other elected representatives in south Mumbai.

He further said that the grand old party would not comment on NDA's Presidential nominee as of now and would meet on June 22 to formally discuss the matter. The meeting will be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, party chief Amit Shah and Union ministers Venkaiah Naidu, Rajnath Singh, Arun Jaitley and Sushma Swaraj.

As the war between Shiv Sena and BJP has intensified after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections this February, the opposition is leaving no stone unturned to make the most of the situation.

"We did not care for power and supported the farmers". The Sena chief agreed, contradicting the BJP, which supported NDA candidate P.A. Sangma. "In the current scenario, the Sena is still out safest bet for a stable state government", a senior BJP minister said.

Yechury said, "Kovind ji was the chief of RSS's Dalit branch".

He said political parties had been informed of the NDA's choice. Several Sena leaders said that this was also the time when it could renegotiate its role in the NDA.
