White House Says Trump Has 'No Intention' To Fire Special Counsel

Jun 25, 2017, 01:13

Newsmax CEO Chris Ruddy set off a firestorm when he suggested that President Trump might fire special counsel Robert Mueller, who's overseeing the FBI's Russian Federation investigation.

Rosenstein said that if he fired Mueller, he would be required to explain it in writing.

"I appointed him. I stand by it. and I am going to defend the integrity of that investigation", he said. "I think it's pretty clear by what one of his lawyers said on television recently". He called me and we had a good chat.

House Speaker Paul Ryan says the White House and President Donald Trump should let the special counsel's investigation continue, and await vindication.

"I regret that I do not", Rosenstein said. Attorney General Jeff Sessions is recused from the Russian Federation investigation and can't either.

Graham then asked whether someone representing Hillary Clinton or the Clinton Foundation would disqualify that person.

In 1973, amid the Watergate scandal, President Richard Nixon ordered Attorney General Elliot Richardson to fire special prosecutor Archibald Cox. "I think it's a threat to the Trump presidency". Still, he added, "I can't imagine that that issue is going to arise". The fallout from the James Comey firing was mitigated, at least to some degree, by the acceptance of Mueller to take over the investigation.

Schiff says that if Trump fires Mueller, Congress might name its own independent counsel to investigate the case. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii.

Mr Mueller is in the earliest stages of his investigation and still building up his team that will lead the probe.

Those in the White House have expressed concern that the probe could detract from the president's agenda for months or years to come.

Kellyanne Conway, a top adviser to the president, tweeted a report citing a Federal Election Commission report that states "Mueller's team includes big Democrat donors".

Even as leading Republican legislators Tuesday waved off the idea of firing Mueller, expressions of discontent with Mueller have bubbled up nonetheless.

Until now, Mueller had drawn widespread praise from Republicans and Democrats alike.

When Ruddy declined, Spicer issued his own statement. In general, it is impermissible to ask prospective government hires about their political leanings, including whether they've made donations. Ruddy later confirmed the comment to CNN.

The talk about dismissing Mueller appeared to be coming from Trump allies - including some close to White House strategist Steve Bannon - who are increasingly frustrated with the prospect of a long and winding probe. The Justice Department later acknowledged Sessions's contacts with Kislyak but said they were part of Sessions's job at the time as a senator.

"I think he's considering perhaps terminating the special counsel", Ruddy said in an interview with Judy Woodruff of "PBS NewsHour".

Newsmax CEO Chris Ruddy admitted he did not speak with President Trump about the notion of firing Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

The president is nonetheless angered by the investigation, which he has described as a "witch hunt", The New York Times reported.
