Federer wins record ninth Halle title

Jun 26, 2017, 00:25

"Andy was exhausted after getting to No. 1 at the end of past year and then has been struggling with injuries", The Guardian quoted Federer as saying in Halle on Thursday before his fighting 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 win over Mischa Zverev in the ongoing Gerry Weber Open.

Roger Federer didn't play his best tennis this week in Halle before the final, but he was simply awesome against Alexander Zverev, beating the young German 6-1 6-3 in just 52 minutes for his 9th crown in Halle!

Federer won the Australian Open in January - his first Grand Slam success in five years - despite not playing in the previous six months, claimed the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells in March and won the Miami Open two weeks later.

He converted his first match point to reach an 11th Halle final.

Federer won 6-3, 7-5 last spring at the Rome Masters before Zverev pulled off a 7-6 (4), 5-7, 6-3 upset in the Halle semifinals.

An eighth victory at Wimbledon would see Federer eclipse Arthur Ashe, who lifted the trophy aged 31 in 1975, as the oldest men's singles champion in the Open Era. Zverev has a shot at his fifth win over a top-10 player this season, as the 20-year-old continues his breakout season.

Zverev defeated Roberto Bautista Agut 6-7 (6), 7-6 (1), 6-1, while Gasquet beat Robin Haase 6-1, 3-6, 6-1.

Federer, who has yet to drop a set in Halle after crashing out of Stuttgart in his first match back last week, limited his serve-and-volley game against the German who is a fine returner and Mayer was broken quickly as his opponent won the first set.

Roger Federer defeated Germany's Alexander Zverev in two sets to win the Gerry Weber Open for the ninth time on Sunday. Make sure I serve well, because he can go through spells where he can serve big.

On the forthcoming clash with Federer, Zverev said, "Well, it's a final".

While Zverev is 15 years younger than the Swiss, Federer also mentioned that he is looking to extend his career as much as possible.

"After I got that in the bag I was really able to start to relax and really play and feel the way I want to feel out there". Zverev hopes to win his fourth title this season and his fifth title for his career. Federer though is undoubtedly the greatest grass player of all time, and is in the best form he has been in for quite a while.
