Gunman kills 3, self at San Francisco UPS facility

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - United Parcel Service employees on Thursday visited a growing memorial at a San Francisco packing facility to pray and sign a poster honoring three longtime colleagues who were shot and killed a day earlier by a co-worker. The gunman fatally shot himself when confronted by police, authorities said.

The shooter turned the gun on himself after killing three employees, according to UPS spokesman Steve Gaut.

San Francisco General Hospital, located about a mile from the facility, was put on alert and told to expect as many as six victims, including the suspect.

Several people were wounded Wednesday morning during a shooting at a UPS facility on San Francisco's Potrero Hill neighborhood, authorities said.

The shooting led to a massive police response and a brief shelter-in-place warning for the surrounding area.

The investigation into the shooting at the UPS facility is ongoing. When police reached the warehouse, they escorted employees away and closed the area to search for additional weapons and interview eyewitnesses.

Another two were wounded by gunfire, police said.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives took to Twitter to announce that they would respond to the shooting and file a report to San Francisco police.

A witness told NBC News she was driving up Bryant Street with her husband when she saw dozens of UPS employees running in the opposite direction.

"I didn't hear anything", she said. "We are always saddened when someone loses a life to gun violence".

The deadliest mass shooting in modern US history occurred in June 2016 when a gunman claiming allegiance to the Islamic State militant group killed 49 people at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida.

It was the second shooting to capture national attention Wednesday, coming hours after a gunman opened fire at a park in Alexandria, Va., wounding five people, including House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.), who is in critical condition at MedStar Washington Hospital Center.

Witnesses say they heard several shots and saw people running out the UPS building.

A police spokeswoman declined to comment further to PEOPLE.

Police returned control of the building to UPS on Wednesday night.

"This is a tragedy that has touched many lives today", Assistant Police Chief Toney Chaplin said at the news conference.

Police and city officials urged residents to avoid the area and remain indoors, said Francis Zamora, a spokesman for the city's Department of Emergency Management.
