Military Backs Up Diplomatic, Economic Tools Against North Korea, Mattis Says

The Pentagon spokesman said that several elements of the first-ever launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile by North Korea were worrisome, including that the missile was launched into busy commercial airspace with no warning.

USA military officials estimated the missile had a range of 5,500 kilometers, potentially putting parts of the northwestern United States within Pyongyang's reach. He says the missile was launched from a Chinese manufactured platform.

US President Donald Trump had called on all nations to confront the "global threat" of North Korea and pledged that Pyongyang will face repercussions over its recent ballistic missile launch.

Asked whether any military action was discussed, he said: "There is no discussion about the specificity of other measures we could take".

"It's a shame they're behaving this way, and they're behaving in a very unsafe manner, and something will have to be done about it", he said. "We stand ready to provide (military) options if they are necessary".

"My team and I are committed to ensuring that efforts to expand armed forces in our state include a strategic Arctic port".

Trump could have pushed harder for diplomatic engagement, but that failed repeatedly. He spoke with his Japanese counterpart on Wednesday.

This comes after the United States on Tuesday warned it is ready to use force if needed to stop the country's nuclear missing program.

While China and Russian Federation have called for concessions on both sides, the USA has so far made no public move to open talks, instead opting to engage in a renewed show of force with Seoul through joint military exercises. "And so we look to China to bring North Korea to its senses".

President Kim Jong Un authorized the launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile that's said to have a long range.

The draft statement recalled that the council agreed to take "further significant measures" in the event of another nuclear test or missile launch and that the top United Nations body would "begin to work immediately on such measures".

President Trump is now in Poland on a diplomatic visit but addressed the issue at a press conference on Thursday. Xi and Trump are also due to met on the sidelines of the summit.

The president tweeted Wednesday, "Trade between China and North Korea grew nearly 40% in the first quarter".

Ahead of the summit, Moon called for toughened sanctions against the North at a joint press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin.

Beijing insists it has made "relentless efforts" to curb Pyongyang's nuclear ambitions in line with United Nations economic sanctions.
