Former House Speaker Dennis Hastert reportedly is out of federal prison after serving 13 months in a hush-money case that revealed accusations he sexually abused teenagers while coaching high school wrestling. He pleaded guilty to illegally structuring bank withdrawals to avoid reporting where he was sending funds as part of the $3.5 million settlement.
During his sentencing in a Chicago court a year ago, Hastert admitted for the first time that he had sexually abused boys when he taught wrestling at Yorkville High School in a Chicago-area suburb from the 1960s to the early 1980s.
"The case against Hastert involved hush money he paid to cover up his sexual abuse of teenage boys in the 1960s and 70s when he was working as a wrestling coach at a high school about 50 miles west of Chicago".
But the case was overshadowed by Hastert's crimes against young athletes, years after the statute of limitations had expired. Records list his release date as August 16. The records indicate he is at a Chicago residential re-entry management office.
The former Speaker had been serving time in the Rochester Federal Medical Center, which provides medical care for inmates. "I'm not going to look back on it".
He is one of the highest-ranking US politicians to ever go to prison, where he was known as Inmate No. 47991-424. At the request of authorities, Hastert secretly recorded two calls to Individual A to catch him making threats, but agents soon realized it was Hastert who was lying. The Tribune honored his wishes until he appeared at the sentencing hearing and confronted his former coach while delivering an emotional statement.
Hastert's attorneys declined comment Tuesday. He has since sued Hastert in a Kendall County breach-of-contract lawsuit seeking the remaining $1.8 million - plus accrued interest - he argues Hastert owes him.
Prosecutors went into graphic detail about the sex-abuse allegations, even describing how Hastert would sit in a recliner in the locker room with a direct view of the showers.
