Senate Votes Against 'skinny' Bill To Repeal Obamacare

The party defectors? The Democrats in disguise who voted against repeal?

The Senate parliamentarian advised that the waiver language violates chamber rules, meaning Democrats could block it. "I've called for all 100 senators to be involved in the process by which we repeal and replace or we fix the Affordable Care Act". It also projected that premiums would increase by an average of 20 percent a year for the next decade.

The provision to defund Planned Parenthood drew opposition from moderate GOP Sens. At the time, this was speculated to be the end of Obamacare repeal in the House. "It is time to move on", Sen. "We must do the hard work our citizens expect of us and deserve".

The American Medical Association immediately denounced the bill. She says she first got the Skinny Repeal legislation late, too.

The "skinny repeal" bill doesn't, prompting the two leading insurance industry lobbying groups to warn that premiums could rise and insurers could drop out of the market if the individual mandate is not replaced.

Unable to pass even a so-called "skinny repeal", it was unclear if Senate Republicans could advance any health bill despite seven years of promises to repeal "Obamacare".

House Speaker Paul Ryan, in a statement earlier on Thursday, expressed his willingness to negotiate with the Senate on drafting a bill that could be signed by Trump, reports Efe news. It's not clear how Ryan's announcement might affect those votes on Friday morning.

Graham's criticisms of the bill he might vote for were the most scathing. "If moving forward requires a conference committee, that is something the House is willing to do".

Since Donald Trump became president, McConnell has been working his plan to repeal ObamaCare.

"We've got to have Republicans and Democrats sit down together and come up with a bill that gets a majority in both houses, otherwise we're going to see this continuous gridlock", McCain said. It's that the American people want to keep Obamacare.

He then issued a statement calling on congressional leaders to convene hearings to work on a bipartisan solution.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has taken comfort in the defeat in the Senate of a Republican-pushed measure aimed at scaling back, or partially repealing, former President Back Obama's Affordable Care Act.

"The White House doesn't support a conference, the White House really likes the skinny bill and would like it to become law", Murphy said, according to the Guardian.

But not all lawmakers saw a forced vote as such a bad thing. "Wait for the show", he told a reporter earlier in the day when asked how he'd vote. "We thought we had it in a good place, very good place, fantastic place - so I'm very disappointed". "I'm proud of the vote I cast tonight".

Ryan said Thursday night, "It is now obvious that the only path ahead is for the Senate to pass the narrow legislation that it is currently considering". The employer mandate would only be eliminated until 2024.

Mr McConnell put the health bill on hold and announced that the Senate would move on to other legislation next week.

Though united in wanting to revamp some of the health care law's regulations, Republicans remain divided over proposed cuts to Medicaid and federal subsidies.
