Tennis star Sara Errani blames mum's tortellini for failed drugs test

Errani worked with Luis Garcia del Moral, one of the doctors at the heart of the Lance Armstrong doping scandal, but she parted ways with him in 2012, just months after she reached the French Open final, but before she reached her career high-ranking of No. 5 in 2013.

A urine sample taken in an out-of-competition test back in February and sent to a WADA-accredited laboratory in Canada was found to contain letrozole - on the banned list due to its qualities as a masking agent.

Former French Open finalist Sara Errani must serve a two-month doping ban after testing positive for the banned substance letrozole in a test taken in February, the International Tennis Federation said on Monday. There is no evidence it would enhance the performance of an elite tennis player.

The former world number five will be out of action for the next two months meaning she will be out of the US Open at Flushing Meadows later this month.

Errani requested a personal hearing, during which her legal team argued that she ingested the prohibited substance inadvertently through her mother's anti-cancer medication "Femara", while staying at her parents' house. The 29-year-old said she was not guilty, blaming her positive drugs test for letrozole on cross contamination from a medicine taken by her mother.

It has now been revealed that Errani, 30, of Italy, accepted a charge of violating anti-doping rules in April.

Some will question why she was allowed to play for nearly four months in between those dates without undergoing another test, despite a busy period in which she played in 10 tournaments and enjoyed a successful run through qualifying at the French Open.

Maria Sharapova defeated Errani in the 2012 Roland Garros final.

She said she was "very frustrated" and "extremely disappointed" by the outcome of the ITF tribunal, but was nonetheless "at peace with my conscience and aware I haven't done anything wrong".

"I have explained in details all circumstances to the Independent Tribunal, who agreed that the food contamination was the cause of my positive test", Sara Errani said. "The only viable option has been than an accidental food contamination occurred at some stage in the house".
