Cuba investigating hearing problem 'incident' at U.S. embassy

Two Cuban diplomats in the United States were expelled in May after suspicions that American officials in Havana were hit with a silent "acoustic attack" that induced hearing loss, State Department officials said.

It was not immediately clear what had happened, with spokeswoman Heather Nauert saying there were no "definitive answers about the source or cause".

Cuban and U.S. authorities have confirmed investigations are underway amid reports that a number of United States diplomats suffered serious hearing loss while stationed in Havana.

The US State Department has failed to confirm if the diplomats have, indeed, lost their hearing, but admitted they have suffered a series of "a number of physical symptoms".

It comes a day after the USA said its diplomats in Havana were experiencing odd physical symptoms.

The incident is the first to occur since Obama officially reopened the embassy, but far from the only case of suspected harassment of American diplomats in Cuba.

Reports suggest the envoys could have been targeted by a covert sonic device that causes hearing loss.

Towards the end of a year ago, United States diplomats began to suffer mysterious hearing loss, according to investigators.

The US embassy in Havana only opened in 2015 as part of former President Obama's rapprochement with Cuba.

The State Department asked the Cubans to leave their embassy in the US on May 23, but CBS first reported the information this week.

Later Wednesday, the Cuban government confirmed the report.

She said two Cuban diplomats were expelled from Washington in retaliation in late May.

The Cuban authorities set up an inter-institutional expert committee for the analysis of the facts; expanded and reinforced the protection and security measures of the mission, its staff and diplomatic residences; and new channels were made available for direct communication between the Embassy and the Department of Diplomatic Security.

An investigation has been launched by the FBI and outside officials into whether the attack was carried out by a third country such as Russian Federation, possibly operating without the knowledge of the Cuban chain of command. She did not go into details but did say Cuba has been reminded of its obligation under the Geneva Convention to protect foreign diplomats.

The Cuban foreign ministry said it would not allow its territory to be used for any action against accredited diplomatic agents or their families.

Cuban officials have pledged to investigate the incidents as well and take appropriate action, the officials told the Post. CNN quotes an unnamed official who stated, "We have worked with the Cubans to try and find out what is going on".

"Cuba addressed this matter with utmost seriousness and has acted with promptness and professionalim to clarify the situation", the statement read, "initiating an exhaustive, prioritized, and urgent investigation at the highest levels of the Cuban government".
