Top US military official arrives South Korea amid North Korea tension

He was assured later yesterday by visiting top U.S. general Joseph Dunford that United States military options being prepared against the North would be for when diplomatic and economic sanctions failed, South Korea's presidential office said.

Though the USA military is "always locked and loaded", the administration is now taking "all possible actions short of military action" to tackle the North Koran threats, including "a very determined diplomatic effort", the general said.

"I am confident that the U.S. will respond to the current situation in a calm and responsible manner in line with our policy direction".

He added that any changes to the USA posture in the region will be made in consultation with the Japanese government - who are also under threat from North Korea.

"We're not closer to war than a week ago but we are closer to war than we were a decade ago", McMaster said on ABC News' "This Week", adding that the Trump administration is prepared to deal militarily with North Korea if necessary.

Less than six years into his reign, Kim has tested more missiles than his father and grandfather combined, conducted three nuclear tests, and is racing to develop a nuclear-tipped missile that can hit the USA mainland.

Amid the exchange of belligerent rhetoric between the United States and the DPRK, tensions ran high on the peninsula.

Also on Monday, China said they will impose sanctions against North Korea by no longer importing their goods.

The meeting came the day before the anniversary of Japan's defeat in World War II, a day known as "Liberation Day" in both North and South Korea because it brought about the end of Japanese colonization.

Dunford arrived at Osan Air Base Monday, and is scheduled to meet with the leaders of US Forces Korea and South Korea President Moon Jae-in.

"He encouraged strengthening trilateral cooperation between the U.S., (South Korea) and Japan", James said.

"The message today was the ironclad commitment to the alliance", Dunford said following a meeting with top South Korean defense officials.

"Both the United States and South Korea do not believe North Korea has yet completely gained re-entry technology in material engineering terms", Suh said in remarks televised on Sunday for a Korea Broadcasting System show.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has tied his nation to the development of nuclear weapons and the means to deliver them despite worldwide condemnation and repeated calls to "denuclearize" the Korean Peninsula.

"I've seen no intelligence that would indicate that we're in that place today", Pompeo told "Fox News Sunday".

Trump will issue an order later on Monday to determine whether to investigate Chinese trade practices that force USA firms operating in China to turn over intellectual property, senior administration officials said on Saturday.

"Any second Korean War would have no choice but to spread into a nuclear war", it said in a commentary.

In a statement last week, Gen. Kim Rak Gyom, commander of the Strategic Force of the Korean People's Army, said the plan to fire "four Hwasong-12 intermediate-range strategic ballistic rockets ... to signal a crucial warning to the US" would be ready by "mid-August".
