Sharapova gets Wildcard for US Open

The US Open also announced it's main draw men's singles wild cards.

Sharapova, the 2006 champion in Flushing Meadows has struggled with injuries since reaching the semifinals in Stuttgart, her first tournament back. She returned to the tour, but her ranking - now 148th - was too low to allow entry into major tournaments, and the French Open denied her a wild card.

"Sharapova has volunteered to speak to young tennis players at the USTA National Campus about the importance of the tennis anti-doping program and the personal responsibility each player has to comply with the program's requirements", the statement said.

Maria Sharapova is headed to the U.S. Open.

On July 31, Sharapova played her first match on the U.S. soil at the WTA tennis tournament in Stanford, California, where she was invited with a wildcard. The last time she participated in the US Open was in 2014.

2006 US Open champion Maria Sharapova has been handed a main draw wildcard into this year's edition of the tournament, which begins on August 28th.

The move by the United States Tennis Association (USTA) comes after Sharapova, ranked 148th this week, was rejected for a wildcard spot into the French Open and missed Wimbledon with a thigh injury. She no longer has to worry about that hurdle thanks to the USTA's controversial decision.

Sharapova returned to the WTA Tour in April after serving a 15-month doping ban.

Maria Sharapova has been granted a wild card entry to play in the US Open after 15 months out following a suspension for doping. She was unaware when she was tested positive for the drug meldonium in 2016 which got added to the banned drugs items list only in January the very same year.

Sharapova wrote that the relationship between the pair fell apart after she, then 17, beat the 23-time Grand Slam champion in the Wimbledon final in 2004. She withdrew from the Stanford Bank of the West Classic earlier this month after suffering the injury in her first-round match.

The 30-year-old Sharapova has not appeared in a Grand Slam since losing to American Serena Williams in the Australian Open quarterfinals in 2016.
