As of the last advisory, at 4 a.m. CDT Thursday, Hurricane Gert was located about 350 miles south of Cape Race, Newfoundland, and was racing to the east-northeast at 39 mph, the hurricane center said. However, environmental conditions should encourage gradual development of the disturbance as it moves west, and it is given a 40 percent chance of becoming a tropical cyclone within the next five days.

At 500 AM EDT, the center of Hurricane Gert was located near latitude 36.0 North, longitude 68.4 West. Gert is moving toward the northeast near 21 miles per hour.

Here in Cayman, temperatures were climbing towards another hot day, with local forecasters predicting a heat index of 105°F and a 30% chance of showers.
