Over 33 lakh people affected by floods in State

"People in low-lying areas need to keep alternative system of keeping emergency medicines, dry food and water for at least one week till the problem is completely eradicated", Commandant 1st NDRF, Guwahati, S K Sastri said. "More than 340 relief camps have been set up in the affected areas, where thousands of people are taking shelter".

The Brahmaputra is flowing above danger level at Neamatighat, Tezpur, Guwahati, Goalpara and Dhubri.

Saharsa and Khagaria were the latest districts to be affected during the day, Special Secretary in the Disaster Management Department, Anirudh Kumar, said.

State Chief Minister Sarbanand visited South Salmara district yesterday to take stock of the situation.

Flood-affected people shift with their belongings at Runni Saidpur in Sitamarhi district of Bihar.

Eight more people were killed in floods in the eastern states of West Bengal and Meghalaya.

The Assam government has pressed into service Army and Border Security Force officials besides the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) officials in relief and rescue operations in different parts of the state.

Amidst the fear of starvation death of wildlife marooned on highlands, the state forest department and several wildlife NGOs has also intensified relief and rescue operation in wildlife sanctuaries.

Flood situation in these states is worsening as rivers flowing through the regions are still out-breaking.

Earlier, PM Modi called Sonowal twice in as many days and expressed his concern over the recurrence of floods and the widespread destruction it caused.

Floods triggered due heavy rainfall has wreaked havoc in most states across India, especially Bihar, Assam, West Bengal and Odisha.

Even though the overall flood situation in Assam improved slightly on Wednesday, the situation in Dhemaji and Dhubri districts continue to be critical. Floods have affected some areas in Uttar Pradesh too.
