Germany protests Turkish-born writer's arrest in Spain

Özedemir has always been a critic of Turkish President Recep Tayipp Erdogan, especially since last year's failed coup attempt in Turkey and the president's authoritarian crackdown in response to it. Know your limits. He is trying to teach us a lesson.

"I am calling on all my countrymen in Germany: the Christian Democrats, SDP, the Green Party are all enemies of Turkey. We have enough doors". Turkey responded to the ban by accusing Berlin of "Nazi-like" tactics.

The German section of the writers' associated PEN said charges against Akhanli centre on a crime committed while he wasn't in Turkey.

He also reaffirmed past Turkish accusations against Germany that it was giving refuge both to wanted Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) militants and suspected plotters in the July 15, 2016, failed coup bid.

Insisting that "people are doing better" than they were four years ago, Angela Merkel made her re-election pitch to a crowd of some 3,000 in a medieval town square in western Germany, a stump speech marred by a clutch of jeering anti-immigration protesters. "Forgive me but you have your legal system and so do we", Erdoğan said. It was not clear why.

Merkel rebuked his remarks, saying Erdogan was "meddling" in German affairs and said, "German voters, including the ones with Turkish background, have a right to vote freely".

The opposition Greens meanwhile have pushed for an even tougher line against Ankara, with its co-leader Cem Ozdemir, who is himself of Turkish origin, a vocal critic of Erdogan.

Ozdemir had previously pressed Ankara to recognise the World War I killings of Armenians as genocide.

Germany will hold a general election on 24 September, and about one million ethnic Turks living in Germany can vote.
