Chicago Professor Allegedly Killed His Boyfriend As Part Of A Sexual Fantasy

Prosecutors said Wyndham Lathem, a microbiology professor at Northwestern University, and Andrew Warren, a treasurer at Oxford University, communicated for months in an online chat room about their "sexual fantasies of killing others and then themselves", the Chicago Tribune reports.

CHICAGO - Law enforcement officials painted a more detailed picture of the detective investigation behind the stabbing death of Trenton Cornell-Duranleau at a press conference Sunday at Chicago Police Department headquarters, streamed live on Facebook.

CPD Supt. Eddie Johnson thanked the law enforcement officers and "law-abiding citizens" who helped to find Lathem and Warren.

In a statement, Northwestern's Vice President for University Relations Alan Cubbage said Lathem was "terminated for the act of fleeing from police when there was an arrest warrant out for him".

At the Sunday court hearing, Lathem attorney, Barry Sheppard, gave the judge letters from the former professor's friends and colleagues that touted his academic and research accomplishments.

Investigators say Lathem had a personal relationship with Cornell-Duranleau. He had been stabbed 47 times in his back, chest, shoulder and abdomen.

Lathem, a well published microbiologist, began teaching at Northwestern University in north suburban Evanston in 2007.

An autopsy found Cornell-Duranleau died of multiple sharp force injuries, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office, and his death was ruled a homicide.

Prosecutors said Lathem paid for Warren to visit the United States and the two of them then made a decision to kill victims of Lathem's choosing.

"It was not domestic in nature, like a husband and wife, or boyfriend (and) boyfriend, or a love triangle, that was not the motive", Deenihan said.

Warren and Lathem allegedly fled the state shortly after Cornell-Duranleau's death, sparking a manhunt. "It was a little more dark and disturbing, as far as I'm concerned".

Lathem allegedly plunged a 6-inch dry-wall saw knife into Mr Cornell-Duranleau's chest and neck.

Lathem also sent a video to friends and relatives apologising for his involvement in the crime, which he described as the "biggest mistake of my life".

Wyndham Lathem, left, and Andrew Warren on August 19.

According to Toller, Lathem paid for Warren's ticket to fly to Chicago from the United Kingdom, where he was employed as a treasury assistant, and picked him up at the airport a few days before the killing.
